Spinsters of San Francisco was founded on November 6, 1929. Today, Spinsters of San Francisco has evolved into a community oriented social and philanthropic organization of up to 175 members. Nonprofit by charter, the group is comprised of college educated, unmarried women who sponsor and raise funds each year for a designated local charity. The group hosts three seasonal Charity Events and two formal Balls for members and their guests. Traditionally, the members have also volunteered their time with local arts organizations, medical facilities and other philanthropic groups such as the Guardsmen.
All proceeds from the Charity Events benefit the member-selected charity. The charity is chosen by a vote of the entire membership at the first general meeting of the year. Past Spinsters of San Francisco's charities include: The YMCA, The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Meals on Wheels, The Arthritis Foundation, Hospice of San Francisco, Diabetic Youth Foundation, Youth Advocates Safe Place Program, The Center for the Education of the Infant Deaf, Camp Okizu, A Home Away From Homelessness, Family House, San Francisco General Hospital's Department of Women's Imaging and the Bayview Hunter's Point YMCA's "Just 4 Girls" Program.
